My thoughts are with all those who have been driven from their homes due to the bushfires in Australia, humans and animals alike. I heard on the news today that over 800,000 animals perished in the fires, and those who survived are overflowing rescue centers.
When I found out there were groups on Facebook co-ordinating the making and distribution of handmade animal accessories, I decided to see what I could do.
I am on a Facebook group called Australian Rescue Craft Guild. This group, should you choose to join and help out, has a wealth of resources to answer all your questions, including and up-to-date list of what is needed.
Crafting for Good!
If you would like to take part, you can do so whether you sew or crochet. The fabric is used for inner layers for Joey pouches and other items, and the pouches themselves are crocheted or knitted.
Nests are also required, and that is what I am making. It’s a very basic pattern and it will give birds and small animals somewhere to feel safe.
I am happy to have found another charitable way to craft. If you would like to join in, read the information carefully so that you know that you are using the correct materials. Addresses where they can be sent are also up on the group.
Back to work for me! I want to finish a second nest today and see if there’s any local drop-off points where I live before I send a package myself. It would be better to combine projects into a larger shipment.
Over to you- are you doing any crafting for Australia? What are you making? Comment below or tag me on Instagram, @voiceshands .
